Structure

The play is divided into two Acts: Act One Scenes 1 - 10 and Act Two Scenes 1 - 10 with an interval between the two acts.

The context for the drama is Thomas Hardy’s Wessex (Dorset) in the 1800s and all the different settings - the farm, Rhoda’s cottage, the church, Egdon Heath etc are created by the ensemble utilising wooden planks and staves etc together with some simple wooden furniture.

If you wish to see the way this can be achieved in performance, an earlier version of this show, performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2008 can be found on YouTube by clicking on the video link on the front page for this section. The music for the songs can also be found by clicking on the same link, but the use of any generic folk tunes would achieve the same result if preferred - or you could invite your students to compose music to fit the lyrics.
