Felicity

A One-Woman Show:

<

I write because...
Because that’s what I do.
It’s like breathing, I suppose.
You might as well ask, why do I breathe? The answer would be very similar.
So.... Let me simplify the question for you. Why am I here?
Well, that’s easy!
We’d just had a big gas bill.
You wanted honesty; this is it!
I wish the reason was more poetic.
But it’s not.

Felicity is a middle aged woman who has had a huge success with her first novel based on a woman, like her, who has gone through a divorce. Now, she is faced with all the competing pressures on her as she embarks on her second novel. She is invited to give a talk to the audience of a small Literary Festival in the South East of England - this is the talk she gives.
At the time, I was talking to a novelist friend of mine and I suddenly got the idea for a one-woman show. I was also writing a lot of blogposts about the process of writing, and this seemed an interesting vehicle to put a human face to some of my ideas.
I had never written a one-woman show, so this may go against any perceived orthodoxy. I have simply tried to breathe life into some ideas by dropping them directly into the centre of one woman’s life experience.
