Structure

The play is divided into four Acts. At the heart of this play are the sessions Rachel has with her analyst; in performance the breaks in the action are only noticeable between the different Acts, the scenes simply forming a way of articulating the concatenation of thoughts Rachel has in any one session with her analyst .  In this way I’ve tried to marry form and content in support of a key theme in this play; as a thought is sparked in the course of the counselling, so the action is played out across this central action, running smoothly between contiguous scenes.

The play should take place on a bare stage apart from two ‘significant’ armchairs - it was originally envisioned in the writing as either a thrust or traverse staging.
