Structure

The play is divided into two Acts, Act One Scenes 1 - 10 and Act Two Scenes 1 - 10 with an interval between the two acts.

The context for the drama is Thomas Hardy’s Wessex (Dorset) in the 1800s and all the different settings - the farm, Rhoda’s cottage, the church, Egdon Heath etc are created by the ensemble utilising wooden planks and staves etc together with some simple wooden furniture.

If you wish to see the way this can be achieved in performance, an earlier version of this show, performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2008 can be found on YouTube by clicking on the video link below. The music for the songs can also be found by going to the same link, but any use of generic folk tunes would achieve the same result  if preferred.
